Ways to work together
Three ways to work with me, from a few weeks on one question to a standing relationship in three-month terms.

Proof of concept
Try it on a small scale before your team builds on it.
For a part of your system that doesn't exist yet, or exists and can't keep up with the load. If you haven't picked a direction, I build an initial version of the two or three options worth trying and run them under a load like yours. If you have, I build the hardest piece first. Either way you get the numbers, a written recommendation with the reasoning behind it, and working code your team can read before they write the production version. Typically runs for three to four weeks.

Architecture decision
One decision, worked all the way through.
For a design your team has already worked out. A working session with your team, then I check the design against your code, build a benchmark where the argument needs numbers, and write up a recommendation with the reasoning behind each decision. Then a session to walk through it and take questions. Typically two to three weeks, and faster when the decision can't wait.

Standing advisor
Someone to discuss with while the decision is still open.
An ongoing relationship in three-month terms, which you can end with a month's notice. This includes a day with your team every other week, on site or by Zoom, and questions in a shared channel, such as Slack, in between. I keep a written log of the decisions we make and the reasoning behind them, for your team to come back to.
